Big Five Safaris

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

As a Big Five destination, Tanzania is one of the best safari countries to see lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalos in their natural habitats.

Why Should You Go on a Big Five Safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania is a Big Five Destination

During a safari in Tanzania, you’re able to witness Africa’s most iconic animals: the Big Five.

This includes lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos. While lions, elephants, and buffaloes are common, leopards are occasional. Black rhinos are rare, but there are national parks that offer you the best chance of seeing them.

Year-round Wildlife Viewings

You’re able to see incredible wildlife no matter what time of the year you visit Tanzania. June to October is the dry season, when sightings are at their best; January to March means more newborn animal viewings; and during April and May you’ll still spot animals but in less crowded parks.

See All the Big Five in One Trip

There’s a high likelihood of seeing all of the Big Five during one safari trip in Tanzania.

Both the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park provide excellent sightings of all five animals, with the rhino just being rare in the Serengeti.

Ideal for a First Safari

A Big Five safari is an ideal trip for first-time safari-goers. If you’re more of a seasoned traveller and have been on a Tanzania safari before, you can add unique activities to your trip like hot air balloon safaris, boat trips, and horseback safaris.

Learn From Expert Guides

We collaborate with the finest lodges, experienced guides, and dedicated local teams in Tanzania so that you can have the best experience possible. You’ll have a knowledgeable guide with you, so you’ll be able to learn about the habits and habitats of the Big Five from them.

Perfect for Photographers

Tanzania is an ideal destination for photographers. Not only is it home to the Big Five, but it’s also made up of an array of stunning locations that make for incredible photo backdrops.

Diverse Wildlife Species

Combine Big Five viewing with Tanzania’s other diverse species. The country is also home to hippos, giraffes, zebras, hyenas, cheetahs, and wild dogs.

Best Destinations for a Big Five Safari in Tanzania

Serengeti National Park

One of the richest ecosystems in Tanzania, Serengeti National Park’s landscapes support a variety of animals, including the Big Five as well as giraffes, cheetahs, elands, topis, and hyenas. The Serengeti offers fantastic game viewing opportunities all year round.

Ngorongoro Crater

While here, you’re able to spot the Big Five. Lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos are all located here – in fact, this is one of the best places to see the endangered black rhino. The high density of wildlife is thanks to the diverse ecosystems within the crater walls.

Tarangire National Park

Four of the Big Five are found here, with just the rhino being absent. Tarangire National Park is known for its massive elephant herds, distinctive baobab trees, and the mini-migration during the dry season when over 200,000 animals enter the park.

5 Tips for a Big Five Safari in Tanzania

1. Visit in the Dry Season

Book your Big Five safari in Tanzania during the dry season, from June to October. At this time of the year, water sources are scarce, so animals gather around the last remaining waterholes, making wildlife spotting easier.

2. Be Selective With Lodges

Stay in lodges close to prime wildlife areas for better Big Five sightings. One of our safari experts will help you book the perfect accommodation for your needs.

3. Choose a Small-group Safari

During a game drive, everyone’s preferences need to be accommodated. To focus on seeing all of the Big Five, choose a private or small group safari for more selective animal tracking.

4. Pack Binoculars

Binoculars can really enhance your safari experience by allowing you to see into dense brush where an animal may be hiding.

5. Be Patient

While on a Tanzania safari, it’s important to be patient and persistent, as some Big Five members, like the leopard, are elusive.
