You'll pick up a rental car in Windhoek and drive to Sossusvlei to climb a dune and visit the dried out salt pan of Dead Vlei with its skeletal trees. You have the options to go quad biking in the dunes or on an early morning hot air balloon ride to see the dunes from above. Most of all, breathe freely and appreciate the immense space of this part of Namibia, its craggy mountains, its horizons that seem to go on forever. Watch the changing colours of the mountains and sky in the late afternoon as they soften to pink and mauve, and drink in the serenity of one of Africa’s most enthralling landscapes.

Space...lots of space

Today you'll make an early start to beat the Namibian heat. You’ll take a tour of the world famous Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, getting a chance to walk up and down a dune or two and take photographs. You'll learn a bit about the wildlife that inhabits the dunes and how it has adapted to survive in this arid environment. The rest of the day is at your leisure, either to laze at the swimming pool with its vast vistas over the Namibian landscape, or to relax in your room. Overnight at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, with meals, drinks and select activities included.

Plenty of perspective

Another day at leisure. A hot air balloon ride over the Namibian dunes as the sun comes up is an amazing experience you shouldn't miss. See the 'fairy circles' – caused by far less romantic-sounding termite activity – and a lone gemsbok or springbok below you, watch the sunrise and feel exhilarated by the cool morning air. (The hot air balloon ride is included in this particular package, but note that it's not available from mid-January to mid-February or in July and August, so book your trip accordingly.) You could also explore the red sand dunes by quad bike; Sossusvlei has some of the highest dunes in the world. The lodge has an observatory and resident astronomer who can help you unravel the mysteries of the Southern Hemisphere's night skies. Overnight at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, with meals, drinks and select activities included.
