Namibia in December

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Wildlife viewing may be more challenging in December as Namibia experiences increased rainfall. In some regions, landscapes are generally blanketed in lush green vegetation and flowers.

Namibia is generally best for photography at this time of year, as the rain usually clears the dust. Thunderstorms provide fantastic opportunities to capture stunning moments on camera. Namibia is home to different landscapes and scenery, making it a photographer’s paradise!

Although larger wildlife is much more challenging to spot, birding is an outstanding activity in December. Migratory birds are often present in the rainy season, allowing you to see diverse species.

Here, you get to see nearly 700 species of birds so remember to pack those binoculars!

Weather in December

Rain is much more present in December than in November. Popular wildlife, such as the Big Five, becomes much more challenging to see. For birders, the wet season is ideal for birdwatching safaris.

Places to Visit in Namibia and Why

Sossusvlei

Rains are occasional here, which means safari experiences are unique.

Wildlife viewing is still possible, and since rain is present, landscapes are much greener than in the dry winter season. Both wildlife viewing and birding are common activities to do during this month.

Namib-Naukluft Park

For nature lovers and adventure seekers, the Namib-Naukluft Park is the place to be.

The rain spotlights 200 species of birds, and common ones seen here are the waxbill, lappet-faced vulture, augur buzzard, pale chanting goshawk, and Monteiro’s hornbill.

To get a good look at them, binoculars are your best friend on a birding experience.

Fish River Canyon

In the wet season, the Fish River Canyon is beautiful. Although hiking isn’t possible due to flash flooding, it’s still a destination worth seeing to admire the scenery.

As is common in the wet season, birding is at its peak here. The birds you see include vultures, eagles, kestrels, falcons, and waterbirds.

Activities to do in December

  • Photographic safaris
  • Birding
