Big Five Safaris

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Kenya is one of the best Big Five safari destinations in Africa. While on safari in Kenya, you have the opportunity to spot lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffaloes in stunning environments.

Why Should You Go on a Big Five Safari in Kenya?

See the Big Five

Kenya is one of the best places in Africa for ticking off the Big Five: lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, and rhinos, making it a fantastic destination for a first safari.

Diverse Ecosystems

Kenya boasts diverse ecosystems, from rolling savannahs and arid landscapes to lush forests, all of which make for breathtaking and unique safari experiences.

Sustainable Safari Experiences

Many reserves and parks in Kenya have conservation efforts to protect species, including rhinos and elephants. While on a sustainable safari in Kenya, discover more about conservation projects that safeguard the environment and wildlife.

Spot Even Elusive Predators

Kenya is a fantastic place to spot big cats – enjoy the thrill of spotting elusive predators like leopards in the wild.

Perfect for Nature Lovers

A Kenya safari is ideal for nature lovers due to the stunning landscapes, including views of the incredible Mount Kilimanjaro. Wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and first-time safari-goers will all delight in an experience here.

Best Destinations in Kenya for Big Five Safaris

Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s most famous safari destination – and for good reason! This is one of the best places to see wildlife in Africa. Thanks to the expanse of grassy plains here, many herbivores can be found, which in turn supports an impressive number of predators, including big cats.

One of the most incredible natural events in the calendar occurs in the Masai Mara: the Great Migration. This spectacle sees millions of wildebeests traverse the plains of the reserve, resulting in dramatic river crossings and predator interactions.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is renowned for its large elephant herds and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Offering a quintessential African safari experience, here you can go on Big Four Kenya safaris (rhinos aren’t present).

This national park consists of five different habitats: open plains, acacia woodland, thorn scrub, swamps, and marshlands, where a variety of animals meander. The swamps in the middle of the park are a must-visit; here you’ll see hippos bobbing around, numerous birds fluttering about, many herbivores coming to drink, and elephants taking baths.

Tsavo National Parks (East and West)

Combined, Tsavo East and West form one of Kenya’s largest wildlife sanctuaries, known for its red-dusted elephants and striking landscapes.

Head to crystal-clear pools of water to see hippos and other animals that come to drink and play in the water. The landscapes of this region are also fascinating, with massive lava flows.

With its rhino sanctuary, this is a fantastic place to spot rhinos while on safari in Kenya.

Lake Nakuru National Park

The massive flocks of flamingos that gather here have made Lake Nakuru National Park a top attraction in Kenya. Both lesser and greater flamingos arrive at Lake Nakuru in their droves to feed in its alkaline waters.

This is also a great area to spot black rhinos, thanks to the rhino sanctuary here. It’s home to Kenya’s largest population of black rhinos, and lions and leopards can also be found here.

Laikipia Conservancies

The Laikipia Conservancies provide intimate encounters with the Big Five in a private, conservation-focused setting. One of East Africa’s finest and most exclusive wildlife destinations, this region is an essential stronghold for rare animals such as the Grevy’s zebra and black rhino.

It also supports impressive numbers of lions, leopards, cheetahs, and dry-country specialities such as reticulated giraffes, greater and lesser kudus, gerenuks, and beisa oryxes.

5 Tips for a Big Five Safari in Kenya

1. Go in the Dry Season

Visit during the dry seasons (June to October or January to February) for optimal wildlife visibility. During this time of year, water sources are scarce, so animals gather around the last remaining waterholes, making wildlife spotting easier.

2. Go With Experienced Guides

Opt for expert safari guides who can help track elusive species like leopards. Discover Africa works exclusively with trusted partners who are experts in the field, so when you book with us, you know you’ll be guided by knowledgeable professionals.

3. Have Patience

While on a Kenya safari, it’s important to be patient and persistent, as some Big Five members, like the leopard, are elusive. Allocate time for many game drives to maximise your chances of seeing all five species.

4. Bring Photography Gear

Bring telephoto lenses for close-up shots of animals in the wild. Binoculars are also great to bring, as they can really enhance your safari experience.

5. Be Respectful

Follow park rules and maintain a safe distance from animals to avoid disturbing them. Always listen to your safari guides while out on game drives and bush walks.
