Nyerere National Park

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Nyerere National Park is one of the largest wildlife reserves in Africa and one of the least visited parks in Tanzania, making it a fantastic destination for safari goers who want to escape the crowds and go on a remote safari. Every type of safari can be experienced here, including game drives, photographic safaris, and walking safaris. Due to the Rufiji River that runs through this park, Nyerere is famous for its boat safaris.

It’s also known for its diverse ecosystems, including rivers, lakes, swamps, and open savannahs, which support a wide range of wildlife. Nyerere is a Big Five safari destination (although rhino sightings are extremely rare); hyenas, cheetahs, hippos, and giraffes can also be seen, and the park houses one of the largest populations of African wild dogs.

Top Destinations in Nyerere National Park

From boat safaris to spot hippos and excellent birdwatching to incredible scenic views, here are the top spots in Nyerere that we recommend:

Rufiji River: Ideal for Boating Safaris

The Rufiji River is a vital water source for the animals of Nyerere National Park, making it a must-visit. A boat safari is highly recommended here to spot hippos and crocodiles in the water and the wealth of wildlife species on the banks drinking and frolicking in the shallows.

Another highlight of this area is the birdlife. If you’re a twitcher, a safari here can’t be missed! Over 400 species include yellow-billed storks, kingfishers, lapwings, colourful bee-eaters, and African skimmers.

Lake Tagalala: A Popular Stop for Wildlife

This lake attracts elephants, wildebeests, and zebras from across Nyerere National Park during the dry season to drink. Following close behind them are predators, like lions, looking for hunting opportunities. Perfect for a boat safari, gliding down Lake Tagalala will afford you views of crocodiles and hippos, as well as bird species that thrive along the banks.

Beho Beho Hills: Perfect for a Walking Safari

Beho Beho Hills is known for its scenic views and excellent walking safaris. A walking safari is a fantastic way to get closer to nature. Unlike quicker game drives, walking lets you see the big animals like elephants and giraffes as well as the smaller details like the insects, birds, and plants that complete the ecosystem.

When’s the Best Time to Go on Safari in Nyerere National Park?

From June to October, the dry season is the best time for wildlife viewing. The landscape is drier, meaning more visibility and fewer water sources, so animals congregate around the few remaining rivers, lakes, and waterholes.

March to May sees the heaviest rain, while November to February is still considered to be the rainy season but with shorter bursts of showers. While game drives are wetter and wildlife harder to spot, the lush green landscapes are stunning sights, and the birdwatching is excellent.

Animals Found in Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park is home to various animals, including the Big Five (lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos, although the latter are rare). The park houses one of the largest populations of African wild dogs.

Hippos and crocodiles can be found in rivers and lakes, and the rich birdlife of the park includes fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers. You can also spot giraffes, zebras, impalas, and rare species like the puku antelope while on safari in Nyerere.

How to Get to Nyerere National Park

By Air

There are daily flights from Dar es Salaam’s international airport and from Zanzibar and Arusha to various airstrips in the park (such as Mtemere and Kiba airstrips), operated by Coastal Aviation and Auric Air.

By Road

While a road transfer from Dar es Salaam is possible, it can take up to seven hours and is best done as part of one of our Tanzania safari itineraries.
