Cost of a Namibia Safari

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

A safari in Namibia offers a unique blend of desert landscapes, wildlife-rich national parks, and cultural encounters, all of which can be tailored to suit your expectations and budget. From the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei to the wildlife haven of Etosha National Park, Namibia provides a diverse and awe-inspiring safari experience.

Whether you’re exploring the haunting beauty of the Skeleton Coast, tracking desert-adapted elephants in Damaraland, or stargazing in the vast Namib Desert, our safari packages are designed to cater to mid-range to luxury budgets while ensuring an unforgettable adventure that supports sustainable tourism.

When planning your trip, remember that international flights are a significant part of the overall cost and are not included in the quoted safari prices.

Factors That Impact the Price of a Namibia Safari

Destination

Namibia’s safari destinations each have their own cost implications. For example, a safari in the iconic Etosha National Park, known for its salt pan and abundant wildlife, may be more expensive due to its popularity. In contrast, exploring the lesser-known regions like Damaraland, with its dramatic landscapes and cultural heritage, can be more affordable while still offering rich experiences. Our expert advisors can share detailed advice about different safari destinations and the accommodation options available.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Namibia is a major factor for your safari budget and significantly affects your overall costs. A mid-range safari in Namibia starts at $350 per person per night in the low season. During the high season, a luxury Namibia safari can start at $1,980 per person per night. From luxurious escapes in places like the Namib Desert or along the Skeleton Coast, we have a wide selection of stays, depending on what you want to experience.

Time of Year

Namibia is an all-year destination, depending on what you’d like to experience. The dry season (May to October) is the peak travel period, with higher prices due to optimal wildlife viewing and cooler temperatures. However, the shoulder seasons (April and November) can offer more affordable rates, with the added benefit of fewer tourists and the possibility of lush landscapes after the rains.

Duration

The length of your safari directly impacts your budget, coupled with your accommodation choices, activities, and level of luxury. Extending your stay allows you to explore more of Namibia’s diverse regions but will naturally increase your overall costs. It’s useful to note that some of our preferred partner lodges offer discounts for longer stays during the low season.

Group Size

Travelling in Namibia with a larger group can help reduce per-person costs due to shared expenses. Joining a scheduled group tour in Namibia might start at around $250 per person per day, while private safaris offer a more personalised experience at a higher cost, ranging from $400 to $900 per person per day depending on the level of exclusivity.

Type of Safari

Namibia offers various safari types, each affecting your budget differently. The type of safari you select, whether a guided tour or private safari, will affect the price relevant to your chosen destination. Guided safaris, which include a knowledgeable guide and often more luxurious accommodations, can be more expensive, while fly-in safaris are usually the most expensive.

Extra Activities and Excursions

Discover Africa works exclusively with lodges that include the standard game drives in your stay, ensuring a seamless and immersive safari experience without unexpected additional costs. Our expert advisors are able to tailor your safari package according to any additional activities and excursions you may want to experience. Any additional activities, such as hot air balloon safaris or cultural visits, may come at an extra cost.

Park Fees and Permits

Park fees in Namibia are relatively affordable, making it one of the more budget-friendly safari destinations in this regard. Entry fees for national parks like Etosha are around $10 per person per day. These fees contribute to the conservation of Namibia’s unique ecosystems and wildlife. Keep in mind that some outfitters add their own conservation and community levies, which will be in addition to the quoted price, depending on the camp. These fees are compulsory and are added directly.

Travel and Transfers

Due to Namibia’s vast distances, internal flights or long road transfers may be necessary. Domestic and charter flights between Windhoek and destinations like Sossusvlei or Etosha are readily available and typically cost between $500 and $1,000 per person. Namibia’s position within southern Africa offers unique travel considerations, contrasting it with other areas in the region.

Meals and Drinks

Most safari lodges in Namibia offer full-board options, including all meals. Luxury lodges often include a selection of local beverages, while mid-range accommodations might charge extra for alcohol and premium services. Our travel consultants ensure you know what you’re paying for.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is essential for your Namibia safari, covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events. We do not sell travel insurance directly but our travel experts can provide guidance if needed. Insurance costs typically range from $75 to $250, depending on the coverage level and duration of your stay.

Tipping and Gratuities

Tipping is customary in Namibia, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sectors. As a general guideline, we recommend about $20 per person per day for your guide and $20 for general staff (porters, cooks, cleaners, waiters, watchmen, etc.). Some lodges have an anonymous tip box for all their staff, but you’re also welcome to give a gratuity directly to the person who helped you.

Visas and Vaccinations

There are currently no vaccinations required to enter Namibia, and be sure to check for related information depending on your nationality, including whether you have visa-free access. Most nationalities, including those from the UK, USA, and Canada, need a visa to enter Namibia.

While malaria risk is generally low, it’s important to note that there is a high risk in the northern and northeastern regions of the country, including Omaheke, from November to June. There is low to no risk of malaria in all other areas, including the Skeleton Coast.

Personal Expenses

Set aside a budget for personal expenses, including souvenirs, additional activities, and incidental costs. This could range from $100 to $500 depending on your preferences and planned activities, allowing you to bring home memories and mementos of your Namibian adventure.

Inclusive Estimates, No Hidden Fees

At Discover Africa, we ensure that our pricing is clear and straightforward, with no hidden fees. Our Safari Cost Calculator provides all-inclusive estimated pricing for Namibia, covering park fees, conservation fees, and all necessary levies. Our expert travel consultants are on hand to help you determine your exact safari budget based on your expected levels of comfort and safari experience. This allows you to plan your safari with confidence, avoiding unexpected expenses.
