Best Destinations for Solo Travel in Kenya

Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s most famous safari destination – and for good reason! This is one of the best places to see wildlife in Africa. Thanks to the expanse of grassy plains here, the reserve hosts many herbivores, which in turn supports an impressive number of predators.

One of the most incredible natural events on the calendar occurs in the Masai Mara: the Great Migration. This spectacle sees millions of wildebeests traverse the plains of the reserve, an awe-inspiring event to witness for solo travellers.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is located right on the border of the sprawling city, which makes a safari tour here unique! See herds of zebras against a backdrop of skyscrapers. The southern boundary of the park is open to the Kitengela Game Conservation Area, so wildlife are free to move in and out of the area.

Wildlife you can spot here include four of the Big Five, with just elephants absent, as well as servals, giraffes, hartebeests, gazelles, hippos, and crocodiles.

Lake Nakuru

The massive flocks of flamingos that gather here have made Lake Nakuru National Park a top attraction in Kenya. Both lesser and greater flamingos arrive at Lake Nakuru in droves to feed in its alkaline waters.

This is also a fantastic area to spot black rhinos, thanks to the rhino sanctuary located here. It’s home to Kenya’s largest population of black rhinos.

5 Tips for a Solo Trip in Kenya

1. Book Small Group Tours

Take part in small group tours for game drives, walking safaris, and other activities for an engaging and social yet still independent experience during a solo trip in Kenya.

2. Opt for Communal Dining

Stay in lodges with communal dining areas to meet other travellers and swap wildlife sightings.

3. Be Flexible

Keep a flexible itinerary to embrace spontaneous opportunities – you never know when you may want to extend a game drive or rush to a leopard sighting!

4. Pack Smart

Travel light and invest in quality safari gear, like sturdy shoes for bush walks and a good camera to capture your memories.

5. Learn Some Local Words

Familiarise yourself with local customs and some sayings in the local language, Swahili – locals appreciate it when you make an effort.
