Great Migration Herd spotted grazing in Kusini Plains, Tanzania

This herd of migrating wildebeest were spotted peacefully grazing in Tanzania’s Kusini Plains. Unlike the dramatics of the river crossings in the north, the Kusini Plains are host to the calving season. The abundance of newborn animals during this time turns the plains into a prime hunting ground for predators.

This herd was seen scattering in fear as they are chased by a group of cheetahs in Tanzania’s Ndutu Plains. During this time of the year, predators are hot on the heels of migrating herds, in pursuit of a quick meal during calving season of the Great Migration.

Herd spotted on the move in Ndutu

This herd was spotted in the Ndutu area of the Serengeti National Park. Wildebeest herds in Ndutu often congregate around Lake Ndutu where they merge and form gigantic herds.

Wildebeest in Southern Serengeti for Calving Season

On the 13th of January, a traveller captured footage of the wildebeest during their calving season in the Southern Serengeti. In the video, you can see a Wildebeest calf being born.

From December to February it is Calving Season for the Wildebeest and the herds would be found in the Southern region of the Serengeti. Here vulnerable calves are hunted by predators, and only the fittest will survive. In late February, the wildebeest herds will continue on their journey North where they will be facing new challenges.
