Crocodile and hippo interactions as wildebeest cross the Mara River in the Serengeti National Park
HerdTracker received these exciting images of a river crossing from visitors to the Serengeti yesterday, 24th October 2022.
“The crossing was from north to south across the Mara River in the Serengeti National Park. So the Tanzanian part of the system.”
The crossing was estimated at about 3000 animals. One killed by crocodiles. Two drowned.
“We also saw a far smaller one just after this of about 500 animals and they crossed in a really bad place with 3 killed by crocodiles and probably 3 drowned, but we didn’t have a good spot for pics.”
This crossing was possibly one of the last at the Mara River for the year. From mid-to-end October, the wildebeest usually head South in search of greener pastures (literally), after spending the last few months grazing north of the Mara River in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, and it’s surrounding conservancies.
