The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara, Tanzania’s most famous safari destinations, are all conveniently close to each other on the ‘Northern Safari Circuit,’ and, together with Tarangire, provide some of Africa’s greatest Big 5 game watching and wildebeest migration safaris.
Southern Tanzania is less well-known, although it has some of the best game reserves in the world, including Ruaha, Selous, and Katavi. The unique Mahale Mountains around Lake Tanganyika are intriguing for an off-the-beaten-path adventure into the bush, with woods full of chimpanzees and magnificent clouds of butterflies. Other places you can visit chimpanzees include Gombe Stream which also ranks among the finest places to track charismatic apes anywhere in Africa.
