A Family’s Dream Bucket-List Journey Across Southern Africa

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when a “someday” dream suddenly becomes a “right now” reality. For Steven and his parents, Africa had long been a destination reserved for the far-off future – a bucket-list reward for another time.

But as the sun began to set on another year of planning, Steven realised that this adventure should no longer be delayed. He wanted to experience the dust and the roar of the bush while he was young, and he wanted his parents there to see it with him.

This is their story.

I’ve always made travel a priority, hitting at least one major international destination every year. Usually, it’s just me or a group of friends, but this time I went with my family. My goal was to blend my thirst for adventure with my parents’ long-held dream of a safari, all while ensuring that we weren’t sacrificing comfort.

Back home in Atlanta, I’m the planner. I’m the one who holds the itinerary and checks the gate times. Just the thought of dealing with different municipalities and logistics in several countries made me realise I needed the support, so stepping into this journey required a certain level of surrender.

I was all about getting out into the wilderness, but my biggest question mark was the accommodation. After a day of activities I wanted to come back somewhere very comfortable. I wasn’t sure what the camps were actually going to be like; I had this lingering worry that we’d be roughing it in literal tents.

With a bit of nervousness and excitement, we landed in Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest city, which the locals refer to as ‘Joburg’. We were ready to see if the reality of the continent could live up to the myth.

Our base in the city was the DaVinci Hotel, which exceeded our expectations. We spent a couple of nights there with one full day of touring, so we appreciated having another day in Joburg to regain strength before the real exploration began.

Rhythms of the River and the Falls

The transition from the urban hum of the DaVinci Hotel in Joburg to the mist-heavy air of Victoria Falls was our first true “pinch-me” moment. When we arrived at Old Drift Lodge in Victoria Falls Town, my scepticism began to melt away. The rooms and the food far exceeded what I’d imagined, but it was the hospitality that really hit home.

When my mom fell ill on our second night, the staff didn’t just offer service; they offered genuine care. They whisked special meals and homemade soups to her room, and that kindness transformed a stressful moment into a warm memory. We quickly realised that Africa isn’t just about the scenery; it’s about the people who call it home.

Because we had to take things a bit slower for Mom to recover, we ended up with the unexpected gift of a private tour of the Falls. Standing there before the Smoke that Thunders with just my family, we felt the sheer, spray-soaked scale of the Zambezi.

We took our first game drives there, spotting elephants and buffalo – a gentle, beautiful introduction to the wild before the deeper immersion in Botswana.

I was worried the best part of the trip was happening too early. The hospitality was top-tier – they truly wanted to hear what we wanted to do and made everything as flexible as possible.

Into the Wild Heart of Khwai

If Victoria Falls was our grand introduction, Khwai Lediba in Botswana was the soul of the trip. To get there, we swapped cars for bush planes.

Khwai felt intimate and intentionally raw. Every single person we ran into would stop, shake our hands, and welcome us to the camp family. We had family-style dinners that pushed us out of our culinary comfort zones, and the lack of air conditioning – initially a point of concern for me – became part of the charm.

There is a specific magic to the Khwai in the heat of the afternoon; a steaming atmosphere that makes the cool evening air feel like a reward. We spent our nights at the boma, gathered around the fire, trading stories with other travellers.

On the drives, the wildlife began to reveal itself in earnest. Led by our guides, Ginger and Jessica, we tracked lions and hyenas. Seeing a trainee guide like Jessica in action was a highlight – it was great to see what African Bush Camps is doing to increase women’s involvement with guiding.

The Delta from Above

The transition from Khwai to the Okavango Delta wasn’t just a transfer. Boarding a helicopter for the first time, we watched the landscape fracture into the intricate, waterlogged veins of the Delta. Seeing that vast, green puzzle of life from above was super special – it’s a perspective no vehicle could ever match.

We touched down at our next home base, Atzaro Okavango, a camp that redefined my definition of luxury. With its humongous lobby, wine cellar, and suites that felt like private sanctuaries, it was an oasis in the middle of nowhere.

It was here we met our guide, Bae. She was a golden person – just the nicest person and her personality was infectious. I gave her a tall order on day one: “We’ve seen a lot, but I haven’t seen a leopard or a cheetah yet.”

Within 24 hours, she had delivered both. I feel very lucky and fortunate that we got to see all the wildlife we were hoping to.

The Urban Finale: Cape Town

The final leg of our journey brought us to the West Coast of South Africa, with our next home base located in the Mother City of Cape Town. Cape Town felt like a different world – a blend of history, culture, and rugged Atlantic beauty. We stayed at One Kensington, which had a lovely boutique, bed-and-breakfast feel.

My parents and I went to Chapman’s Peak and the Cape of Good Hope. It’s one of those things that you read about in school – I never thought I would actually see the Cape of Good Hope myself.

We also wandered among the penguins at Boulders Beach and took the cable car up Table Mountain. While the adventurer in me looked at the hiking trails with a bit of longing, sharing those panoramic views from the summit with my parents was a different kind of reward.

My only regret was not having two more days to explore the Winelands more or to summit Lion’s Head.

Reflections on the Road

Every trip has its frictions, and I think it’s important to be honest about them. For all of us, the sheer shift in temperatures – from, like, 100°F days to 60°F nights – was a constant game of layering, but it didn’t take away from the experience.

But these were small ripples in an otherwise perfect sea. What stayed with us wasn’t the heat or the logistics; it was the intentionality of the people. Whether it was the staff singing a welcome song upon our arrival – a moment that made me feel like I didn’t even deserve such a grand welcome – or the guides remembering small details from a conversation we’d had days prior, that human connection was the thread that pulled the whole trip together.

What Stays With Us

When I share my experience with coworkers and friends, I talk about how incredible the wildlife was; how nice the people were; and how there was just such a variety of cultures, food, and landscapes I experienced under the umbrella of one trip.

I went to Africa to help my parents check a box, but I returned with a new perspective on my own life. Africa is no longer a “someday” destination for me; it’s a “must-return”.

By doing this big trip now, I haven’t finished the story – I’ve just opened the book. The dust of the Khwai has been washed off, and the sound of the Delta’s water has faded, but the memory of that golden light and the warmth of the people remains.

“As it was their first time in Africa, I wanted them to stay on the Zambezi while at Victoria Falls; that’s why I recommended Old Drift Lodge – when you look out your suite, you see the river. I recommended Khwai because of the incredible predator population, and Atzaro because of the mixture of land- and water-based safaris.”
