Malaria Free Safaris

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Although malaria is a major travel concern in much of Africa, it has a minimal presence in South Africa. More than 95% of South Africa and most of its major attractions are entirely free of malaria, so you can have a safe, malaria-free safari.

Why Should You Go on a Malaria-Free Safari in South Africa?

Safe Safari Experience

You can enjoy a safe safari experience without the need for anti-malarial medication when choosing South Africa as your safari destination.

Peace of Mind

A malaria-free South Africa safari is ideal for families, pregnant travellers, and those seeking added peace of mind.

See the Big Five

South Africa is a Big Five safari destination, so you’re able to explore game reserves with lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes without compromise.

Luxury Safari Lodges

Experience luxurious lodges in Madikwe Game Reserve, Pilanesberg National Park, and Addo Elephant National Park, with family-friendly activities.

Convenience

A malaria-free safari in South Africa is perfect for travellers prioritising health and convenience, as there are no added worries or medication to consider.

Best Destinations for Malaria-Free Safaris in South Africa

Madikwe Game Reserve

A malaria-free destination, Madikwe is known for Big Five sightings and child-friendly safaris. Lions, white rhinos, and elephants are common sightings, while leopards and buffaloes are a bit rarer.

This is one of the best places for cheetah and African wild dog sightings. The reserve houses a few wild dog packs, so you have a good chance of seeing these endangered animals.

Pilanesberg National Park

Set within the crater of a volcano that erupted millions of years ago and offering stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife, Pilanesberg Game Reserve is a unique destination for safari-goers.

The wildlife is plentiful with possible sightings of the Big Five, including both black and white rhinos, as well as leopards, wild dogs, various rare antelopes, and more than 354 bird species.

Addo Elephant National Park

One of South Africa’s largest parks, Addo is famous for its massive elephant population, diverse ecosystems, and malaria-free status.

Not only is this national park home to the Big Five, but also the Big Seven! Along with lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinos on land, the two remaining species are in the ocean: the southern right whale and great white shark.

Waterberg Biosphere

Located in the Limpopo province, the Waterberg Biosphere features a mix of game reserves and unique ecosystems to explore.

Here, travellers are able to go on Big Five safaris, including night drives, to find more elusive species. Game farms also offer hiking and bush walks, and there are mountain bike and horseriding trails.

KwaZulu-Natal (Drakensberg and the Midlands)

Only a few hours’ drive from Durban are the Drakensberg Mountains, known for their hiking trails and scenic beauty. You can also get into the air for a bird’s-eye view of the mountains in a hot air balloon or helicopter, or get your adrenaline pumping during a treetop canopy tour.

In the Midlands, you’ll find an abundance of game and birdlife. Go on nature walks and visit the two world-class waterside bird hides for spectacular birdwatching.

5 Tips for a Malaria-Free Safari in South Africa

1. Visit During Winter

Visit during the cooler months (from May to September) for milder temperatures and more comfortable game viewing.

2. Pack Smart

Bring high-SPF sunscreen and insect repellent to stay comfortable. Pack safari-coloured clothing and comfortable shoes for bush walks.

3. Family-Friendly Accommodation

Look for lodges offering activities tailored to children. Many lodges include family suites, kids’ programmes, and babysitting services.

4. Hire Experienced Guides

Use local guides familiar with malaria-free zones and wildlife behaviour. At Discover Africa, we work with the finest lodges, experienced guides, and dedicated local teams to ensure the best safaris possible.

5. Do Your Research

Confirm the malaria-free status of your destination before booking. Our safari experts will help you choose the best destination for your ideal South Africa safari.
