Flights to Mozambique

Africa's best tailor-made safaris

Mozambique offers a stunning range of safari and coastal experiences, with pristine wilderness areas, beautiful beaches, and abundant wildlife. Understanding how to get there by air is key to planning your trip. Here’s a guide on flying to Mozambique from around the world and an overview of the main airports.

Most international travellers reach Mozambique by flying into one of the country’s primary international airports in Maputo, the capital city, or in the coastal resort areas of Vilanculos and Nampula. From there, domestic flights can be taken to other regions, such as the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago or the Gorongosa National Park, as well as safari destinations further inland.

Flights from Europe

Several European airlines provide direct flights to Mozambique. South African Airways offers direct flights from Lisbon, Portugal, to Maputo. Other options for flights with a stopover include airlines like KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Qatar Airways, which fly to Maputo with a stopover in their respective hubs.

Flights from North America

Flights from North America to Mozambique typically involve at least one stopover, with common connections through European or Middle Eastern hubs. Airlines such as Delta Air Lines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates offer flights to Maputo, typically with a stopover in cities like Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul.

Flights from Asia and the United Arab Emirates

Airlines such as Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Ethiopian Airlines provide flights from various Asian cities, such as Beijing and Hong Kong, to Maputo. These flights usually stop in Doha, Dubai, or Addis Ababa before continuing to Mozambique. Air Mauritius also provides flights from Mauritius to Maputo, which is an ideal connection point from other parts of Asia.

Flights from Australia

There are no direct flights from Australia to Mozambique. However, travellers can fly via major international hubs such as Doha or Dubai, with airlines like Qatar Airways and Emirates offering flights to Maputo with a layover. South African Airways also operates flights to Maputo with a stopover in Johannesburg.

Maputo International Airport

Maputo International Airport, located in the capital city of Maputo, is the primary gateway to Mozambique. It is well-connected to major international hubs in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. From Maputo, travellers can take domestic flights to various regions in Mozambique, including coastal destinations and national parks.

Vilanculos International Airport

Vilanculos International Airport is the main gateway for those visiting the Bazaruto Archipelago, one of Mozambique’s premier coastal destinations. The airport offers flights from Maputo and other regional cities and serves as the entry point for many international tourists heading to the islands.

Nampula International Airport

Located in northern Mozambique, Nampula International Airport provides access to the northern parts of the country, including the stunning Quirimbas Archipelago. Flights from Maputo and regional cities connect visitors to this remote and pristine region.

Many safari lodges and coastal resorts in Mozambique’s remote regions are accessible by light aircraft flights. Operators like Solenta Aviation and other charter companies provide transfers to exclusive safari destinations and luxury coastal resorts, including the Quirimbas Archipelago and Gorongosa National Park.

Tips for Flying to Mozambique

  • Book flights early, especially if you’re travelling during peak seasons (June to October).
  • Check visa requirements for Mozambique; many travellers can obtain visas upon arrival, while others may need to apply in advance.
