LGBTQ Travel in South Africa

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

When thinking about LGBTQ-friendly countries to travel to, unfortunately African countries aren’t often thought of. While there are some African nations that have laws against the LGBTQ community, there are others that are safe and extremely welcoming. One of these LGBTQ-friendly travel destinations in Africa is South Africa.

Is South Africa LGBTQ Friendly?

Yes! South Africa is a very safe and welcoming place for LGBTQ travellers. South Africa is known for its diversity and warm hospitality, and there are many destinations within the country that are open-minded and inclusive.

South Africa stands out as a beacon of LGBTQ+ rights in Africa, being the first country on the continent to legalise same-sex marriage in 2006. The South African Constitution also explicitly protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg have well-established LGBTQ+ communities, and many lodges and safari destinations pride themselves on providing a welcoming and respectful environment for all guests.

Discover Africa is a member of IGLTA and we frequently provide travellers with LGBTQ+ friendly accommodations and services. A combination of Cape Town and a safari in the Kruger area, Sabi Sands, or Timbavati would be a safe, wonderful experience for LGBTQ travellers.

Safety in South Africa for LGBTQ Travellers

While major cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg are exceptionally welcoming, it’s important to be aware that some rural areas may hold more traditional views. We recommend being mindful of local customs and showing respect for cultural differences. Open displays of affection might be more comfortable in urban settings than in certain rural areas.

Our safari planners are happy to recommend accommodations and experiences where LGBTQ+ travellers will feel most comfortable and supported.
