South Luangwa is the birthplace of the walking safari, pioneered in 1950 by British conservationist Norman Carr. He worked with local chiefs to establish a more intimate way of experiencing the bush.

Unlike game drives, on a walking safari you’ll feel the landscape, slowing down to notice smaller details often missed from a vehicle, such as animal tracks, unique flora, insects, and bird calls.

The bush thins out, making tracking easier. It’s also the best time to see endangered African wild dogs or painted wolves, which den in winter. The park is a stronghold for an increasing population of them, with more than 350 individuals, especially in the Mfuwe and Chichele areas.

By late October, thousands of hippos can be seen jostling for space in the shrinking river, though be prepared for extreme heat.

The wet season, or green season, runs from November to April. Eyes peeled for newborn animals, migratory birds in breeding plumage, and lush, vibrant landscapes that provide stunning backdrops for photography.
