Zebra and Wildebeest Herds Spotted in Rongai Area

This herd of wildebeest and zebra was spotted today around 12pm near the Rongai area of Kenya. The Rongai and Posee Plains are among the first areas to receive the migrating herds as they move north from Tanzania’s Serengeti toward Kenya’s Masai Mara

Wildebeest herds finally graze around Lake Ndutu!

This herd was sighted near Lake Ndutu in Southern Serengeti. After their late movements in October and November, most of the wildebeest herds have finally reached the Ndutu region on their migration journey. Wildebeest herds spotted in Ndutu!

This herd was sighted in the Ndutu area of the Serengeti National Park. As mentioned, the herds are mostly in the Ndutu area and calving season in the first few months of 2025 is fast approaching. Megaherd spotted on the southern Serengeti plains!

This megaherd was spotted in the Kusini area of the Serengeti National Park. The lush green plains of the southern Serengeti provided excellent grazing for this gigantic herd on the final day of 2023! The much anticipated arrival of the wildebeest megaherds in the southern Serengeti is now underway.

Massive herd spotted at Ndutu Swamp!

This herd was spotted in the Ndutu Swamp area of the Serengeti National Park. These thirsty wildebeest stopped for a well-deserved drink on Christmas Day! This massive herd will now likely settle in the Ndutu area for calving season after which they will begin the migration route again with their new calves.

Large wildebeest herd spotted near Lake Masek!

This herd was spotted near Lake Masek in the Serengeti National Park. Herds have arrived in increasing numbers in the Ndutu area during the past week which means that new calves are not far away! This herd stopped for grazing near Lake Masek, one of the two lakes in the area.

Magnificent morning to take a balloon flight over the Ngorongoro conservation area

Just a magnificent morning to take a balloon flight over the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the southern Serengeti with Serengeti Balloon Safaris.

With ideal weather conditions, from mostly clear skies to light winds and an amazing sunrise as we calmly lifted off from our NCA launch site and slowly floated west southwest.  Slowly flying over the plains of NCA and Serengeti from various heights, then continuing over the woodland area, then over Lake Ndutu for some spectacular views.

What an amazing way to see the great migration that has littered the short grass plains of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro conservation area. Though the plains were dominated by Wildebeests and Zebras, we also experienced some of the other amazing animal species of this great ecosystem, including Jackals, Giraffes, Gazelles, Secretary birds, Vultures, Eagles, Storks, Flamingos, Ostriches, Bat-eared fox, Hyenas and Elephants.

Our flight lasted one hour and 12 minutes with a calm standup landing 1 kilometre west of the lake. “We began the champagne celebration at our landing site with a brief history of ballooning along with the traditional champagne toast before moving on to our bush breakfast”.

Olduvai Gorge all the way to the Serengeti National Park heading back to Gol Kopjes

A large number of the wildebeest were seen in the Olduvai Gorge all the way to the Serengeti National Park heading back to Gol Kopjes.

Located in the Great Rift Valley, Olduvai Gorge is nestled between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park. For anyone going on safari that is interested in archaeologist and paleontologist, this is the place to visit!
