A Bucket-List Trip Realised: From Botswana to Namibia

Listen to the story

For Tamara and Kevin, travelling through southern Africa had long been on their bucket list – seeing the majesty of Victoria Falls, exploring the waterways of the Okavango Delta, and experiencing the awe-inspiring desert landscapes of Namibia.

Along with their close friends Rich and Cindy, Tamara and Kevin finally made this dream a reality.

This is their story.

For me, Africa had long been a “someday” destination – a reward parked behind career milestones and the busy hum of life.

But as the departure date finally arrived, that anticipation was shot through with a very human set of nerves. I found myself worrying about the logistics no brochure can quite prepare you for, like the tiny bush planes and malaria.

We were already a month into a six-month journey when we headed for Johannesburg to meet Rich and Cindy. Then, the first Africa moment hit when their flight was cancelled. They were stuck, and to make matters worse, Rich was on crutches.

I remember the frantic calls to the Discover Africa team trying to coordinate a rescue from afar. But the stress dissolved the moment we saw how quickly the information moved. Even with our safari expert on vacation, the guides on the ground already knew about the crutches before we even mentioned them.

Water and Stone: The Delta Pulse

The journey truly began when the four of us finally stood together in the mist of Victoria Falls. It was a sensory overload.

From the spray of the Falls, we moved toward the deep, ancient pulse of the bush at Elephant Valley Lodge in the northeastern part of Botswana. It was here that the elephants first made their presence known – not as distant shapes, but as a parade. There is a specific, heavy grace to an elephant’s movement that stops your heart.

I was worried about the small aircraft flight into the Okavango Delta, but it was actually a magical experience. Rising above the earth, the Delta revealed itself as a precarious, beautiful miracle – a labyrinth of jade channels and lily pads. Landing at Kadizora Camp was spectacular. We were no longer on city time; we were on Delta time, dictated by the rising sun and the movement of the predators.

It was here where we found a lioness with cubs so tiny their eyes were still closed. Seeing that vulnerability in the middle of such a vast, predatory landscape felt like a private gift.

The Heart of the Hunt

At Kadizora, the greater-than-expected theme of our trip really took hold. I was blown away by how close we could get to the wildlife. One morning, we found two young male cheetahs. We were within two metres of them – close enough to see the rise and fall of their breath.

We watched them bring down a baby warthog and stayed as they ate. It sounds raw, and it was, but there was something profoundly honest about it. The other people in our Jeep were just relieved the cheetahs finally got a meal after a few failed days. I felt like I was witnessing the earth’s oldest story.

Later, in the dry expanse of Etosha and Ongava in Namibia, the narrative softened. We saw two female lions and three cubs. These cubs were bigger than the first ones we saw in Botswana, so they were moving around – they were so freaking cute!

Every night, Kevin and I would ask each other, 'Does this meet expectations?' And every single day, the answer was the same: 'It’s greater.'

Through Our Eyes: The Human Connection

While the animals were the spectacle, it was the people who gave the trip its soul. In Namibia, we met Jason. He was supposed to be our guide, but by the end of nine days, he was family. We spent practically 24 hours a day together, and that proximity created a bond I didn’t expect. Jason knew exactly how to balance us – he’d talk geology with the space geek in Kevin while also catering to my hunger for information on the local culture.

It was in the Okavango Delta, though, that my perspective on tourism really shifted. The staff there were so open about their lives. They told us quite plainly, “Without you tourists, we wouldn’t be able to live.” It reframed everything for me.

In San Francisco, service people might complain about tourists, but here, there was a deep, vocal appreciation. It turned tipping into something much more meaningful. It wasn’t just a gratuity; it was a way to support a community so they wouldn’t have to turn to poaching. It was a huge learning moment for all of us.

The Honest Miles and the Dune Oysters

An adventure like this has its grit. There were long, exhausting days – 4:30 AM wake-up calls and four-hour drives over bouncing, corrugated roads. We were senior citizens on a mission, and by the time we hit Swakopmund in Namibia, we were feeling the miles.

Then came the oysters. We had a gorgeous barbecue lunch in the dunes, but the raw oysters didn’t sit well with the guys. By the time we reached the stunning Mowani Mountain Camp in Namibia, Rich and Kevin weren’t feeling very good.

It was heartbreaking to see them stuck in bed at such a beautiful lodge, and we missed out on tracking the desert elephants because of it. Jason was incredible, though, hovering nearby to see if we needed a doctor and making sure the guys were back on their feet within 24 hours. We still managed to see a bit of the prehistoric rock art before we left – a small win after a rough night.

The Medicine of the Wilderness

As we wound our way back to Windhoek for the final departure, I felt a strange sense of clarity. We aren’t used to this level of luxury – we’re backpackers and campers at heart. But after 40 years of work, being pampered in the middle of the wilderness felt like a necessary medicine.

People ask me if I’d take my kids next time. I think they’d love it, but honestly? I think they should wait. I want them to work for it like we did. I want them to save their money and experience it as a reward. Because when you’ve earned the horizon, the view is that much sweeter.

What Stays With Me

The dust of Damaraland in Namibia eventually settles, and the roar of Victoria Falls fades, but something has permanently shifted in me. I’m already looking toward 2030 – there’s a total solar eclipse coming straight through Namibia, and I’ve already told the team to put it on my radar.

I carry back more than just photos of lion cubs and sun-drenched dunes. I carry the feeling of having lived one of those rare bucket-list chapters – the kind of experience that stays with you after the journey home is over. The stillness, the scale of it all – it was special in a way that’s hard to fully explain until you have lived it. This was not just another trip. It was something I will keep returning to in my mind for years to come.
