The world's best destination for land-based whale watching, Hermanus also happens to be surrounded by numerous beaches and coves, a wine valley and beautiful natural scenery.
Between July and November every year, a multitude of southern right whales migrate to the shores of the small seaside town and the former fishing village of Hermanus. They are easy to see from the beach or from the scenic coastal cliff paths that stretch all along and beyond the town.
These paths also connect the town's two main beaches, Voëlklip and Grotto. Here, the sand is white and, although the water is chilly, the beaches are great for families. Both beaches are backed by quiet residential areas.

I love visiting Hermanus just before summer kicks off, but I also really enjoy walking along the cliff paths during winter, as the sea holds an imposing beauty at this time of year.

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is a dream for wine lovers and the wines have a special quality that is only found in vineyards that receive a constant, cool sea breeze. Wine tastings here are often paired with nature trails and scenic lunches. For nature-lovers, Fernkloof Nature Reserve stretches behind the town into the hills and hikes along its fynbos trails offer panoramic views across the Atlantic Ocean.
Walker Bay Nature Reserve runs along the ocean, with many trails, a long, deserted beach and picnic spots amid the coastal vegetation. Hermanus Golf Club may well be one of the prettiest courses in the country, with beautiful ocean and mountain views from its greens. For a look into the town's history, the Soldiers' Memorial Museum commemorates the experience of an individual soldier. The Whale House Museum teaches visitors more about the migrating whales, as well as the dolphins and humpback whales that are also found in the area.
