Timbavati Safari Short and Sweet

I was recommended Discover Africa by a friend who raved about them for their African Safari adventure and they didn’t disappoint. From the start the communication was timely, despite the time zone difference, and the advice was thorough and precise. It seemed to me that our agent, Susan, was always available no matter what time I was communicating with her. More than that she regularly checked in with me during our trip to make sure all was going well and checked us in for all our internal flights ahead of time.

The first thing Susan did was to find out what we wanted from our trip and then used that to tailor an itinary that met all our desires. Susan’s intimate knowledge of tourism in Africa had us booked into game reserves and guides in South Africa and Kenya which had all the big 5 on display plus more. The accommodation and tour guides she organised were fantastic.

Thanks to Susan we have had an African adventure taking in Karongwe and Masai Mara game reserves, Victoria Falls and the beautiful city of Cape Town which has provided photos, videos and memories we will cherish for the rest of our lives.

Susan and the team from Discover Africa you have excelled yourself through the initial contact to the very end of our journey. We were dazzled with the views of Cape Town. Victoria Falls and of course the game parks. The animals did not disappoint the spectacular service of all the staff will be etched in our memories forever.

The animals were the stars of the show but I have to mention the service,food and accomodation was out of this world. I just came back from my holiday organised by Discover Africa and can safely say this was one of the most incredible trips I’ve ever done (and I travel quite a lot). I can’t recommend them enough!

I contacted them last minute, merely 4 weeks ahead of my planned travel dates. Matthys, the travel expert that took care of me, scheduled a video call to understand better what I’m after. I gave him a rather vague brief (Victoria Falls + safari somewhere in South Africa, Botswana or Zimbabwe, including walking safaris; avoiding touristy hotspots and crowds as much as possible). Within just a couple of days he came back with an itinerary that fit the bill to a tee. Just a few highlights from my trip: watching a group of hippos at sunset just in front of my porch in Chundu Island near Victoria Falls, a microlight flight over the falls (the views are incredible), watching a pack of wild dogs hunting kudus in Sabi Sand (and hyenas joining in too), and tracking lions on foot at Rhino Walking Safaris in Kruger NP. Each of the locations I visited offered something truly special.

Everything was perfectly organised, including all the transfers between locations. Matthys was very responsive whenever I had any questions (even outside of working hours). This was my first visit to this part of Africa, and I already know I’ll be coming back soon enough and will reach out to Discover Africa to help me make it happen.

Adelle, our travel coordinator with Discover Africa, took care of every single detail of our wonderful trip! We started planning 14 months out and Adelle took care of everything all the while keeping us notified and being 100% available for questions. As for the trip itself, it was the trip of a life time! 10/10 recommend! The accommodations, the food, the animals, the people and South Africa were absolutely wonderful!!! 10/10 recommend!!! First of all, we highly recommend Discover Africa. The service they provide is invaluable. Our travel planner, Vihann, gave us expert guidance on our accommodations and tours. He arranged for all of our transports including internal flights and he even checked us into our flights! Everything went like clockwork and we had the comfort of knowing Vihann was available to us if needed. We will definitely use Discover Africa for our next trip.

Here’s a summary of our trip: For our first trip to Africa, we wanted to focus on South Africa. We started in Cape Town and stayed at the Victoria & Alfred on the waterfront which is an excellent location. We went on a city tour, tour of the Cape and also visited the wine country. We had the same tour guide for three days providing continuity. Cape Town was a great way to start our trip. We then went to Timbavati Private Reserve (at Vihann’s recommendation) and stayed at Kambaku River Sands. We arrived in the early afternoon and went on our first game drive. Within 24 hours, we saw the big five and much more. The accommodations, food, and staff at the lodge exceeded our expectations.

Next, we traveled to Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, Arathusa Safari Lodge. Our suite faced the watering hole where hippos reside plus elephants, giraffes, etc came to drink often. Again, the lodge staff, food and accommodations were excellent. Between the two reserves, we went on 11 game drives. We ended our two week trip in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, at the Old Drift Lodge located on the Zambezi River. The Lodge staff helps put together an itinerary from the list of numerous activites available to you. There are morning and evening game drives offered as the lodge is located in the Zambezi National Park, but we chose other activites such as the sunset river boat safari, tour of the falls, and breakfast at the Lookout Cafe.

With Vihann’s help, we also booked white water rafting with Wild Horizons on the Zambezi and Devil’s Pool. All activities were fantastic and again, the staff, food and accommodations at the Old Drift Lodge were outstanding.

The delivered on everything that they promised, granted, I did the book online and only communicated via email. The guides are very friendly and very knowledgeable. The tour vans were nice, new, clean and equipped with WiFi.

Megan is extremely responsive and attentive. She catered to my needs in great detail. I would not hesitate recommending them to anyone planning a trip to Cape Town and Johannesburg.
