Day 2
Volcanoes National Park
Staying at Sambora Kinigi Lodge
Your gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda begins early in the morning at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi, where you’ll meet the park’s expert rangers for a briefing on the day’s adventure. After being assigned to a small trekking group, you’ll set off into the dense, mist-covered forests of the Virunga Mountains, guided by skilled trackers who know the movements and behaviors of the gorilla families.
The trek itself can vary in length and difficulty depending on the location of the gorillas, taking you through bamboo forests, mossy hillsides, and lush undergrowth. Along the way, the rangers share insights about the ecosystem and wildlife, building anticipation with every step. Then, in a moment that’s nothing short of magical, you’ll come face-to-face with a family of endangered mountain gorillas—often including playful juveniles, watchful mothers, and a dominant silverback.
You’ll spend a precious hour in their presence, observing their interactions and soaking in the incredible sense of connection. Once the encounter ends, you’ll retrace your steps with a quiet sense of awe, returning to the lodge with memories that will last a lifetime.
Beyond the trek, immerse yourself in the local culture through a community visit and gain insight into the lodge’s commitment to sustainability and conservation. With personalized service and a tranquil atmosphere, Sambora Kinigi Lodge ensures a meaningful and memorable Rwandan journey.
