Rainfall Variability: The migration follows a roughly circular route, timed with the seasonal rains.
During the wet seasons, particularly the' long rains' from March to May, the animals disperse widely across the plains, as water and grazing are plentiful everywhere, making sightings less frequent and predictable.
Large Area of Movement: The migration covers vast areas, spanning some 30,000 square kilometers between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara. The sheer size of this area means that the wildlife can be spread out and harder to locate at certain times of the year.
Predator Activity: Predator presence, especially of lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, can influence the routes taken by the herds. Intense predator activity in particular areas might lead the herds to alter their paths, affecting where and when they are seen.
The migration is dynamic, and while some months offer high-density viewing opportunities, others present a challenge in locating the dispersed herds.

The entire trip details provided by Discover Africa from the beginning through our few adjustments were thorough and very clear. I had the time of my life visiting Nairobi, Kenya. All arranged drivers were great, the citizens were warm and inviting, and the accommodations and delicious foods served our needs well.
In Masai Mara, we have numerous stories that will bring us laughter for many years to come. The safari tour driver, Dennis, was the real star of the trip. He ensured that we saw as many animals as possible, including the big five (rhinoceros, lion, elephant, leopard, and Cape buffalo) within the first two drives.

She listened and patiently helped us put together the perfect itinerary for us. She answered our numerous questions, responded quickly despite the time difference, and gave honest feedback on ideas and camps without trying to push her own company’s agenda. After booking, and all during the trip, she was there. The same was true of every single person we interacted with from Discover Africa – if they were picking us up from the airport, they were there waiting. When we mentioned we’d like to eat where the locals do in Arusha on our one-day layover before heading to the bush, our local contact set it up and ate lunch with us. When we messaged Susan with a small change we’d like to make halfway during the trip, she made it happen.
The private guides she helped us arrange at every camp were tremendous. Every aspect of the trip was seamless. Being used to having to manage our own flight transfers, getting through immigration on our own, solving any issues that might arise ourselves etc. what a pleasant surprise to have someone with us every step of the way without being on an organized tour. Susan checked in with us almost daily to make sure everything was going as we expected. I would highly recommend Discover Africa, and Susan in particular, to anyone looking to ‘do their own thing’ on safari – fantastic tour operator!

We started off in Ilkeliani, on the border of the Masai Mara park (you cross a little footbridge next to the tents over the Talek river and you are right in the park) which is professionally managed by Sylvester.
He happily and obligingly dealt with all our requests. We were treated to 3 delicious meals/food boxes per day. The camp prepared food exactly according to our dietary requirements. At night we heard the hippos and hyenas of the park from our perfectly appointed tents.
The highlight of the stay was our safari drives. Our devoted guide Joseph showed us amazing sights ranging from cheetahs marking their territory, a leopard guarding its kill, and lions feasting on zebra. In addition to that, Joseph opened our eyes to the Masai culture.
After that, we flew over to the Serengeti where we spent 5 wonderful days at the Nasikia mobile migration camp in the northern Serengeti national park.
The mobile camp is located on the top of a hill, and we were literally surrounded by wildebeest and zebra herds.
The food was deliciously prepared by Martin who took great care of our dietary requirements.
Showers were a little challenge because there is no running water, so they are bucket showers. The tents though were well equipped and very comfortable.
After that we flew over to Karatu where we visited Lake Manyara park (didn’t see flamingoes or tree lions unfortunately, but the park is beautiful) and the Ngorongoro Crater, filled with game.
We would highly recommend Megan and her team at Discover Africa.com.
