Nxai Pan National Park

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

A striking contrast to Botswana’s wetland ecosystems, Nxai Pan National Park is a vast, open landscape of fossilised salt pans, grassy plains, and acacia woodlands. Located on the northern fringes of the Makgadikgadi Basin, the park is best known for its seasonal zebra migration, iconic baobabs, and excellent predator sightings.

Must-Visit Areas in Nxai Pan National Park

Watch the arid landscape transform as the earth drinks in the rain during the wet season, laying a welcome mat down for thousands of zebras in search of lush grasslands, and visit baobab trees that have watched over the land for centuries:

Nxai Pan: Seasonal Wildlife Encounters

At the heart of the park lies Nxai Pan, an ancient lakebed that transforms with the seasons. During the wet months from November to April, the pan is covered in lush grass, attracting thousands of zebras and wildebeests that migrate from the Okavango Delta in search of fresh grazing. This migration, one of the largest in Africa, draws predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. In the dry season, from May to October, the landscape becomes an arid expanse where elephants and other herbivores congregate around artificial waterholes, providing excellent game viewing.

Baines’ Baobabs: A Historic Landmark

One of Nxai Pan’s most famous attractions is Baines’ Baobabs, a cluster of massive, ancient trees named after 19th-century explorer and artist Thomas Baines. These centuries-old baobabs stand on the edge of Kudiakam Pan, a stark, white salt pan that stretches to the horizon. The trees, immortalised in Baines’ paintings, remain unchanged, making this a surreal and unmissable stop for visitors exploring the park.

When’s the Best Time to Visit Nxai Pan National Park?

The best time to visit depends on what you want to see. From November to April, the summer rains bring lush landscapes, dramatic skies, and the zebra migration, making this the ideal period for witnessing large-scale wildlife movements. Birdwatching is also exceptional during this time, with migratory species arriving in abundance. The dry season, from May to October, offers sparse vegetation and high concentrations of wildlife around water sources, making game viewing easier.

Animals Found in Nxai Pan National Park

Nxai Pan is home to a wide variety of wildlife, with seasonal migrations adding to its diversity. The zebra migration is certainly a highlight, with thousands of animals moving into the park during the green season. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas follow the herds, while elephants are common, particularly in the dry season when they rely on the park’s waterholes. Other notable species include springbok, oryx, giraffes, and bat-eared foxes. Birdlife is also abundant, with species such as kori bustards, secretary birds, and various raptors calling this desert landscape home.

How to Get to Nxai Pan National Park

Nxai Pan National Park is accessible by both road and air. The drive along the 4×4 route from Maun takes approximately three to four hours. For those seeking a more convenient option, charter flights from Maun or Kasane can land at an airstrip near the park, providing quick access to lodges and camps.
