Travelling as a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer (LGBTQ+) community often requires careful planning. In many African countries, same-sex relationships are still criminalised or culturally stigmatised. Fortunately, Mozambique is one of the few African countries that stands out for its relatively progressive stance toward LGBTQ+ rights.
Is Mozambique LGBTQ+ Friendly?

In 2015, Mozambique made a landmark change by decriminalising same-sex relationships. The country removed colonial-era laws that had outlawed “acts against nature”, signalling a more open legal approach to sexual orientation.
Mozambique does not have laws that actively protect LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination, nor does it recognise same-sex marriages or civil unions. However, consensual same-sex relations are not criminalised, and this legal shift places Mozambique ahead of many of its neighbours in southern Africa.
Public attitudes in Mozambique are still largely conservative, especially in rural areas, and LGBTQ+ individuals may encounter cultural or social resistance. That said, Maputo and some coastal tourist areas tend to be more relaxed and accommodating. As tourism grows, many hospitality providers are becoming more attuned to international standards of inclusivity.
Safety in Mozambique for LGBTQ+ Travellers
Mozambique is considered one of the safer African countries for LGBTQ+ visitors. While public displays of affection (regardless of sexual orientation) are generally frowned upon, same-sex couples are not likely to face legal repercussions. As with any destination where LGBTQ+ rights are still evolving, discretion is advised in public spaces, especially outside of tourist areas.
