Akagera National Park

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Akagera National Park, encompassing savannah, woodland, and wetlands, offers a classic safari adventure in Rwanda, complete with the Big Five and scenic landscapes along the Akagera River. Add on to your Rwanda gorilla trekking experience by going on a Big Five safari at this national park.

Must-Visit Areas in Akagera National Park

Enjoy a fully engaging and immersive safari in Rwanda by going on guided walks, boat trips, and night drives:

Lake Ihema: Birding Boat Safaris

Glide across the water of Lake Ihema to spot the park’s aquatic fauna. Crocodiles and hippos are virtually guaranteed sightings, and birders will be in heaven with the abundance of water birds in the area. African fish eagles, African darters, open-bill storks, African jacanas, and malachite kingfishers can be seen near the lake. Keep a lookout for papyrus specialists such as the blue-headed coucal, papyrus gonolek, and white-winged warbler.

Mutumba Hills: Highest Point in the Park

Hike up Mutumba Hills for breathtaking panoramic views of Akagera National Park and excellent game viewing opportunities. Head to one of the scenic viewpoints to gaze upon Hippo Beach to see massive groups of these animals sunbathing and bobbing in the water.

Kilala Plains: Ideal for Game Viewing

This is the most famous plain in Akagera National Park, and for good reason! Rwanda safari tours here will bring you to extensive glasslands with uninterrupted views of large herds of buffaloes and zebras. With the impressive amount of prey animals, Kilala Plains is the ideal hunting ground for lions and other predators.

When’s the Best Time to Visit Akagera National Park?

June to September, during the long dry season, is the best time for a Rwanda safari. During these months, the lack of rain forces wildlife to congregate around remaining water sources, which enhances viewing opportunities. Mid-December to mid-February is the shorter dry season, also ideal for safari tours.

Animals Found in Akagera National Park

As a Big Five safari destination, Akagera National Park is home to lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos. Other wildlife often seen on game drives includes Maasai giraffes, Burchell’s zebras, warthogs, and 11 species of antelope, including topis and Defassa waterbucks. With an avian checklist comprising 480 species, Akagera is one of Rwanda’s most exciting birdwatching destinations. This region is particularly strong on raptors and waterbirds, as well as savannah and woodland dwellers.

How to Get to Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is a two-and-a-half hour road transfer from Kigali International Airport. For the ultimate luxury Rwanda safari experience, opt for a helicopter transfer to the national park.
