Windhoek Holiday

The ultimate guide to your next Windhoek Holiday

Get to Know Windhoek

Enjoy a draught and have some sauerkraut at one of the famous brauhauses in Windhoek’s capital before embarking on an epic Namibian safari.

Windhoek is not your typical African capital. Rush hour lasts half an hour. People obey the rules of the road. It’s almost as if some German efficiency from this former German protectorate has rubbed off on the inhabitants of Windhoek.

The capital of Namibia has a big German expat community, which adds to its culinary allure. It’s probably one of the best places in Africa to enjoy authentic Teutonic specialties such as sauerkraut, schnitzel, various types of wurst (sausage) and of course, the local brew, Windhoek Lager.

It’s also the gateway to most big national parks and game reserves, including Etosha and Namib-Naukluft national parks, and coastal towns like Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Most of these destinations are a few hours away by car. If you are doing a Namibian road trip (the majority of the country’s roads are in excellent condition and can be driven with a normal sedan), Windhoek is the perfect place to rent a car. If you are travelling to more remote places such as the Skeleton Coast or Damaraland, your safari operator will probably charter a small plane from Windhoek International Airport.
