Simon’s Town

Why Visit Simon’s Town?

Simon’s Town is a historically important coastal village set at the very end of the peninsula before Cape Point. Home to the SA Navy, Simon’s Town also boasts Boulder’s Beach, where you can swim with penguins; the Toy Museum and the Navy Museum, along with plenty of antique stores, coffee shops and harbour views.

  • Simon’s Town Overview

Originally a harbour town, Simon’s Town has a peaceful harbour with a small waterfront area that features restaurants and shops. A market can also be found here, with African curios and other trinkets.

For nature-lovers, a visit to Boulder’s Beach is highly recommended. The beach is a dedicated nature reserve, and is home to large colonies of African jackass penguins that nest between the large boulders and crevices. Swimming with these penguins in sheltered pools is possible – just be sure not to disturb the birds or leave any litter on the beach.

With a laid-back culture, Simon’s Town is ideal for lazy meanders, stopping for cake at the various cafes, or visiting the fascinating Toy Museum, which adults and children can easily spend over an hour seeing toys from all eras.

Highlights & Places in Simon’s Town

Simon’s Town has a long history in the Cape, especially as an important Naval base. A visit to the Navy Museum offers plenty of insight into this history, and also tells the story of Just Nuisance, the Navy’s famous Great Dane. A statue of this iconic canine is proudly displayed in front of the waterfront.

Consisting of a long stretch of Main Road, Simon’s Town has a selection of beaches, along with sidewalk cafes, museums, Africa’s oldest Anglican church and a number of antique stores. A walk along the Main Road offers the chance to explore these finds at leisure.

There is also a small Cape Malay Quarter, which lies on steep cobbled roads just off the Main Road, heading towards the mountain.
