When to Go

Like the rest of the Etosha region, Ongava Game Reserve has a mostly dry climate, with annual rainfall occurring in January and February. Summers are from November to February, while autumn runs throughout March to May. Winter is generally dry, running from June to August. Spring is from September to October. Game viewing is best during the dry season, as this is when game converges on the water holes, ensuring excellent sightings.

International travellers will be able to transfer by road from Windhoek International Airport. There is a small airstrip near Ongava Game Reserve for local flights, while road travel is generally the easiest way to enjoy the scenery en route to the reserve.

The best way to get around Ongava Game Reserve is by 4x4 vehicles. As the reserve is home to many large cats and other potentially dangerous wildlife, walking is generally not permitted in many parts of the reserve.

ATMs/Currency/Money: there are no banks or ATMs in the reserve itself, so it is best to withdraw cash at Windhoek International Airport before departing for Ongava Game Reserve.

Drinking Water: bottled water can be brought into the reserve, and lodges are fully stocked with water and other refreshments.

Hospitals & Medical: lodges have basic first aid facilities, while hospitals and other facilities can be found at Windhoek.
