Okaukuejo Camp is the oldest rest camp within Etosha National Park in Namibia. The camp boasts a large, flood-lit waterhole that offers excellent game viewing, along with game drives, nature walks and a host of facilities and accommodation options.

    With all of Etosha National Park to explore, game to be seen at Okaukuejo Camp includes zebra, springbok, endangered black rhino, lion, elephant and large numbers of antelope to name but a few. Bird watching offers the chance to spot a diversity of endemic and migratory species. Possible sightings include great crested grebe, black-necked grebe, lesser flamingo, greater flamingo, black-faced babbler, Sabota Lark, spike-heeled lark, pink-billed lark, wattled crane and grey crowned crane..

    Scenery at Okaukuejo Camp and the surrounding Etosha National Park varies from dry savanna, shrub and thorn scrub in the west, to tree savanna and broadleaved woodland in the east. Throughout the park, acacia woodland can be seen. Mopane woodland predates in the central area, while Combretum woodland is prevalent in the eastern areas. With spectacular photographic opportunities, Okaukuejo Camp provides the perfect base from which to explore Etosha.

    Okaukuejo Camp’s location in Etosha National Park means that safari activities are par for the course. Game drives are offered three times a day – in the mornings, afternoons and evenings, while self-drive safaris can be enjoyed throughout the day. The camp is home to Etosha Ecological Institute, which is responsible for the research and conservation of the park's flora and fauna. The institute offers nature walks conducted by the ecological experts, offering plenty of insight into the surrounding plants, birds and game species found within Etosha.

    Game viewing can also be enjoyed from the flood-lit water hole, which offers viewing throughout the day. Bird watching is excellent from the water hole viewing area, organised game drives, nature walks and self-drive safaris. Birders should bring a Namibia bird book and a pair of binoculars to spot as many species as possible on safari activities. For those wanting to relax, the camp has swimming pools, a restaurant and bar, as well as lounges that are ideal for enjoying a cold drink and taking in the beautiful views. Children can enjoy selected safari activities if they are over the age of 12. With much to see and do, Okaukuejo Camp is ideal for Etosha National Park trips.

    When to Go

    Like the rest of Etosha, Okaukuejo Camp has two main seasons. The dry, cool season is from May to September, with excellent game viewing during these months. The hot, wet season is from November to March, with the best bird watching during this time.

    Okaukuejo Camp lies at the public southern entrance to Etosha National Park, about six hours from Windhoek by road. International travellers can enter Namibia via Windhoek International Airport, with road transfers to the camp.

    Some parts of Okaukuejo Camp can be explored by foot with trained guided, but 4x4 vehicles are needed for game drives. 

    Okaukuejo Camp Tips : Know Before You Go

    ATMs/Currency/Money: there are very few banking facilities at Okaukuejo Camp - be prepared and withdraw cash before arriving.

    Internet Availability: some lodges may have internet access.

    Drinking Water: bottled water is available at the restaurant, lodges and shop within Okaukuejo Camp.

    Hospitals & Medical: there are basic first aid facilities at the camp, with hospitals in Windhoek.

    Visa Requirements: most visitors do not require a visa to enter Namibia.
