Namibia
Why Visit Namibia?
Namibia is the country of brilliant orange dunes of Sossusvlei, thriving wildlife of Etosha National Park, the barren, mystical appeal of the Namib Desert, and of course the extreme adventure capital of Swakopmund. Namibia is also home to a string of endangered wildlife species.
-
Namibia Overview
Namibia’s culture is every bit as varied as its landscapes, and there are a number of tribal groups and nationalities across Namibia’s cities, towns and regions. A number of villages still follow traditional customs, which can be visited as part of a tour.
Wildlife is abundant in Namibia, especially in the Etosha region and Caprivi Strip. In the drier desert regions, wildlife is limited to desert-dwelling species, while the coastal areas are rich in marine life. Endangered species such as wild dog, black rhino, oribi and puku roam the plains, with the area’s abundant cheetah population.
The area’s birdlife comprises of a variety of birds that rarely or accidentally appear in Namiba. The Egyptian Vulture, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Ross’s Turaco and Cardinal Quelea are members of the rare population.
Namibia has much in the way of natural beauty and outdoor pursuits, but little in the way of clubs and bars. Windhoek offers a bit more of a nightlife plus shopping options, while most safari lodges are equipped with dining and bar facilities.

Best Time to Visit Namibia
When to Go
Namibia has a semi-desert climate across most of the country. The coastal regions are cooled by the cold Benguela current, with fog but little rainfall. The central plateau is higher up; causing lower temperatures.
Summer runs from October to April, bringing thundershowers that cause wildflowers to bloom. Winter runs from May to September, bringing mild days and freezing nights.
The interior has two rainy seasons – a short one from October to December, and a longer one from mid-January to April.
Getting There & Getting Around
Getting To Namibia
There are a number of options for getting to Namibia, with air travel being the easiest way to get into the country. A number of major airlines are represented, with the largest international airport found at Windhoek.
Flights to and from neighbouring countries are available, and road travel can also be done from Namibia to South Africa. Bus services offer routes between Namibia and neighbouring countries. There is also a rail service from Angola into Namibia.
Getting Around Namibia
Due to its large size, getting around Namibia is best done by plain, 4x4 vehicle or bus. There are some private cabs available in Windhoek, and occasional mini-bus taxis on offer in the larger towns and city, with bus routes from Windhoek to outlying areas.
Cycling is not usually possible in most areas of Namibia, due to the varied terrain and often rugged landscapes. Self-drive offers convenient way to get around, however 4x4 vehicles are strongly advised.
Namibia Tips : Know Before You Go
ATMs:
There are ATMs in most cities, with the most common banks including Bank of Namibia and FNB.Forex/Money:
Foreign exchange facilities can be found at Windhoek Airport, with exchange facilities also available at leading banks – especially within larger towns.Credit/Debit cards:
Cards are widely accepted in Windhoek and other large towns, plus many hotels, safari lodges and retail outlets. In the small towns however, it is best to bring cash.Internet availability:
In Windhoek you will be able to find a few internet cafes, with some hotels or safari lodges offering WiFi. In the more remote areas however, there is not much in the way of internet, leaving you free to unplug in peace and quiet.Drinking water:
Tap water is safe to drink in most towns – in rural areas and many rest stops between major tourist destinations such as Etosha or Sossusvlei, it is best to stick to bottled water.Hospitals & Medical:
As the capital city of Namibia, Windhoek has the best medical facilities and healthcare options. As many parts of Namibia are extremely remote, visitors should take care to stay safe and healthy. There is a malaria risk in the Caprivi area, so malaria medication is essential if visiting those parts.Visa Requirements:
No visa is required to visit Namibia, however all visitors need to provide confirmed return ticket plus proof of their travel plans. A valid passport of six months is also required to enter the country. -
