Namib Desert Overview
Often called the world’s oldest desert, the Namib Desert comprises of a large portion of Namibia’s total land percentage. It is here that the iconic landmarks of Sossusvlei, Namib Naukluft Park and Swakopmund can be found. With the distinctive landscapes of red dunes, endless stretches of sand with strange trees and surprising bursts of vegetation, the Namib is also one of the most spectacular destinations in Africa.
While you won’t find a typical safari experience in the Namib, you will be able to climb the world’s highest sand dunes, explore the ancient cultures of the desert-dwelling tribes, try a range of adventure sports such as sky diving, dune boarding or quad biking and explore the oft photographed vistas of the Namibian desert.
A number of game farms, guest farms and charming bed and breakfasts can be found throughout the Namib Desert, ensuring plenty of variety when it comes to accommodation. From your base, you can explore the region and take in the many sights.

Stop at Dune 45, something not to be missed. This dune is very famous! Bring some packed breakfast and make your way up the 300m high sand dune early in the morning.
Dead Vlei: Stunning views of Black Dead trees on white clay soil will be revealed to you. Next to it, orange sand dunes are rising 300 metres high up in the air.
Go explore the Riverbed of the Tsauchab and its geology during a short hike.

Temperatures can reach 40º C which plummet at night to cool levels. Average daily temperatures range from 20 to 34º C.
When to Go
Namibia has a semi-desert climate across most of the country.
Summer runs from October to April, bringing thundershowers that cause wildflowers to bloom. Winter runs from May to September, bringing mild days and freezing nights.The interior has two rainy seasons – a short one from October to December, and a longer one from mid-January to April.

Getting into the Namib Desert can be done by car, plane or 4x4 vehicle, with plenty of views to take in along the way.
Getting Around Namib Desert
Due to its large size, getting around the Namib Desert is best done by plane or 4x4 vehicle. Walking is possible in some parts, especially guided bush walks through the various habitats.
Namib Desert Tips : Know Before You Go
There is not much in the way of facilities within the Namib Desert, as this is a largely remote area with vast stretches of unspoiled landscapes. It is best to be prepared and stock up on money and supplies in the town of Swakopmund before entering the more remote regions.
