Exploring the great spans of reserve can be enjoy with a guided 4x4 game drive where you’re sure to get a glimpse of a number of wildlife the reserve is so proud of. From elephants, buffalo and giraffe to lion, leopard and cheetah, the Moremi wilderness is packed with game and predators alike.
Large numbers of elephant, wild dog and rare red lechwe are some of the reserve’s prized wildlife, which can be seen roaming the banks of the delta.
With the chance to see the endangered wattle crane, cruise down the Okavango Delta in a makoro (dugout canoe) for a unique birding experience. Birding is big in the area with a list of birds as long as my arm, including the secretary-bird, white-backed vulture, malachite kingfisher and peach-faced lovebird making an appearance.
If you fancy a sturdier cruise down the channels of the delta, you can enjoy all your wildlife and birdlife viewing from the stability of a boat cruise.

The Moremi Game Reserve is home to a tranquil stretch of the Okavango Delta, offering 4x4 drives and boat trips through the various eco-systems of lush swamp.
The Chiefs Island and forested Mopane Tongue, in the east, can be explored, arriving by makoro offering a glimpse of the great diversity of plant and wildlife that make Moremi so well known.
The area’s ecosystems include riverine woodland, floodplains, wetlands and reed beds, mopane woodland and dry savannah woodland, meaning you have a variety of settings upon which to view an array of wildlife and birdlife.
Best Time to Visit Moremi Game Reserve
When to Go
Moremi Game Reserve is an all-year-round destination, however, if you’re going for the game viewing, the best time to go is between May and October. Wildlife are thirsty and meet up around waterholes. Between these months its Botswana’s dry season which means vegetation is dried out and grass is flatter; making it easier to see wildlife.
In November to April, birds and vegetation thrive in the area’s rainy season with birds returning from their migration and plants bursting with rich colour.

Getting To Moremi Game Reserve
Many of the lodges have their own airstrip which allows you to fly into the reserve from Maun. The other option is to take a 4x4 drive from Maun to Moremi South Gate.
Getting Around Moremi Game Reserve
When you arrive in Moremi, your transport options include plane, 4x4, Makoro or boat cruising.
Traveling by plane means you get to witness the vast wilderness from a birds’ eye view, whereas a guided 4x4 drive or Makoro/boat cruise give a far more personal experience of the surrounding nature.
