Matetsi is a remote, game-rich concession within Zimbabwe, near the famous World Heritage Site of Victoria Falls. Once a major hunting concession, the area is now the largest private game reserves in Zimbabwe. Elephant sightings, game viewing and birding are excellent in this area.

    Situated within close distance to the Adventure Capital of the Africa, Matetsi is ideally positioned to allow travellers to enjoy a host of adventure activities within Victoria Falls. This includes action-packed pursuits such as kayaking, white water rafting, abseiling and rap jumping, along with hikes across the beautiful Zimbabwe landscapes that have been made famous across guide books and postcards everywhere. Birding is excellent in Matetsi, with hundreds of endemic and migratory bird species to be seen across the diverse habitats.

    As one may expect from a premier safari concession, game viewing is also exceptional within Matetsi. Large numbers of elephant can be seen throughout the region, with migration of these gentle giants occurring from Botswana into Zimbabwe through Victoria Falls.     When to Go

    Matetsi has a sub-tropical climate, with two marked seasons. The hot, rainy season runs from November to March, while the warm, dry season runs from April to October. Game viewing is at its best during the dry season, and this is also when adventure activities can be enjoyed at nearby Victoria Falls. The Falls are at their highest level during the wet season, and birdlife is extremely abundant during these months.

    Matetsi lies close to the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and can be accessed by road transfer from this town. International visitors will need to transfer to Matetsi from Harare International Airport, which serves flights from all over the world. 

    Getting Around Matetsi

    The best way to get around Matetsi is by 4x4 vehicles. The reserve itself is very remote, with large game found throughout. Walking can be possible with armed guides, but it is not safe for travellers to attempt to walk around the area without a guide. Boat travel on the Zambezi River is another great way to spot game from the water. 

    Matetsi Tips : Know Before You Go

    ATMs/Currency/Money: there are banks and ATMs in Victoria Falls town, but generally cash is the best option.

    Internet Availability: some lodges may have internet access; however the reserve itself is as remote as it should be, allowing visitors to unplug and enjoy the sights.

    Drinking Water: bottled water can be purchased at shops in Victoria Falls, and lodges also have plenty of fresh drinking water.

    Hospitals & Medical: there are basic healthcare facilities in Victoria Falls town, with hospitals and larger facilities in Harare.

    Visa Requirements: most visitors do not require a visa to enter Zimbabwe – check with your local embassy to see if your country is exempt from visa applications.
