Why Visit Makhado?

The small town of Makhodo lies very close to Kruger National Park, making it a gateway to Big 5 safaris in Limpopo. Along with Kruger, a number of smaller game reserves are also found close by, along with historical landmarks, rich culture and plenty of activities to enjoy.

  • Makhado Overview

Makhodo is more than just a wildlife destination however, and with a rich cultural history dating back hundreds of years, the town has a fascinating blend of Venda and Afrikaans cultures. The town does not have much in the way of nightlife, however its positions on a primary access road mean that it is fairly developed compared to other small towns that are completely off the beaten track. Restaurants, shops and a few bars can be found in town, along with a number of accommodation options.
A visit to Madi a Thavha Design offers the chance to learn more about the traditional beadwork and arts created by the unemployed women living in the rural areas around Madi a Thavha mountain farm. Items can be purchased, and crafters can be watched as they create amazing jewellery and other goods using talent that is handed down through each generation.

Birding is also a popular pastime, and there are a large number of endemic and migratory species for bird watchers to spot amongst the varied habitats.
