Madikwe Game Reserve

Why Visit Madikwe Game Reserve?

A conservation success story, Madikwe Game Reserve is a private reserve boasting a world-class family friendly Big Five safari experience. Set amidst vast expanses of malaria-free habitats that are rich in wildlife and birdlife, the reserve is a testament to intensive efforts to restore the area to its natural abundance.

  • Madikwe Game Reserve Overview

Witness the unforgettable sight of a mother lion leading her cubs to safety as you stop on your game drive to take in the sights. You may come across large herds of elephant making their way to the nearest waterhole, or watch springbok leaping through the grasslands. If you’re lucky during an evening drive, you may even spot the shy nocturnal leopard about to set off for a hunt.

These are just some of the things that you will see at Madikwe Game Reserve, where the abundance of wildlife and birdlife lends itself to a premier Big Five safari experience.

The reserve is ideal for families, with plenty of family friendly activities on offer. Game drives, bush walks and other activities can be enjoyed each day.

Highlights & Places in Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s largest reserves, and is home to some 8000 animals and hundreds of bird species. It is hard to imagine that this thriving reserve was once almost destroyed when it was converted into farmlands, but after major conservation efforts the reserve was restored to its natural environment.

A wildlife relocation programme and many other joint ventures between the state, private sectors and local communities within the reserve’s boundaries have all led to the huge success that Madikwe enjoys today.

The surrounding grasslands, rocky outcrops and woodlands areas are home to a wide range of game species, including many endangered species. Game drives, self-drive tours, bush walks and other safari activities offer the best way to explore the reserve.
