Lüderitz is a well know tourist destination, playing host to the first German settlement in the former Deutsch-Sudwest-Afrika. Some of the many reasons to visit Lüderitz include the spooky ghost town of Kolmanskop, the rich German history and a variety of sightseeing and adventure activities.

Lüderitz Overview
Lüderitz offers the most beautiful, empty and clean beaches. To the north side of the town is Agate beach. This beach is more intimate and perfect for relaxing. Lüderitz offers a wide variety of aquatic birds; large numbers of flamingos, cormorants and seagulls inhabit the shallow lagoon. When sailing in the bay, seals and dolphins can be seen playing in the water.

In 1908, a worker called Zacharias Lewala found a sparkling stone amongst the sand that he was shovelling away from the railway line. His supervisor was convinced it was a diamond. When it was confirmed that the shiny stone was indeed a diamond, the news spread fast, sparking a huge diamond rush.
Halifax Island and the Jackass Penguin colony are other popular tourist attractions when taking a boat cruise from the harbour.
Visit the lagoon; here you can take amazing pictures of different birds including pink Flamingos. On the way you will pass picturesque bays and unspoilt gorgeous beaches.

Lüderitz has a mild desert climate with a minimum temperature 10°C and maximum temperature of about 23°C.
When to Go
Namibia's climate is typical of semi-desert terrain, hot days and cool nights. The coastal regions are cooled by the cold Benguela current, causing fog and inhibiting rainfall. Over the central plateau in the country which is higher up, temperatures are understandably lower.

You can reach Lüderitz either by plane (on certain airlines) but by car is recommended.
By car, it is a 4 hour drive from Keetmanshoop which gives you the opportunity to watch the wild horses on the plains.

The best way to get around Luderitz is by car, by public transport or by foot. (Lüderitz is small enough to explore on foot)
