Spanning across the Groot Karoo in the north and the Klein Karoo in the south, the Karoo is a semi-arid region famous for its sheep farming, strong mix of cultures and numerous small towns. Wildflowers are also a popular attraction, especially within the Groot Karoo regions.
A drive through either one of these regions offers a unique glimpse into the startling diversity of plant, animal and bird life, as well as the wide range of cultures found across the Karoo. From the Afrikaans farming towns dotted throughout the Karoo, to the flamboyant artist town of Darling, or the San tribes who can still be found in the remote parts of the desert.

Temperatures can peak to minus 5°C in winter and 43°C in summer.
When to Go
With a semi-desert climate, the days are very hot in the Karoo, with extremely cold nights. Very little rainfall occurs throughout the region, with summers offering more marked temperature extremes.
Getting There & Getting Around
Getting To Karoo
The Karoo’s different regions can be accessed from different parts of the country. The Groot Karoo lies in the north, near Kimberly and Namaqualand. The Klein Karoo is situated in the south, near the town of Ladismith.
Getting Around Karoo
4x4 vehicle offers the best way to explore the various terrain and landscapes of both the Klein and Groot Karoo. Walking is possible in the towns, but is not recommended further out due to the heat.

There are banks and facilities throughout the various small towns found throughout the Karoo, but you may drive for hours before reaching any sign of civilisation.Credit/Debit cards:
There may be accepted at some hotels and larger towns, but generally most of the small towns are not equipped in this regard.Internet availability:
