Hout Bay

Why Visit Hout Bay?

Hout Bay is a small fishing village situated on the tail end of the Atlantic Seaboard in Cape Town. Famous for its beautiful beach, laid-back atmosphere and fresh seafood, Hout Bay also boasts a craft market, vibrant township and plenty of restaurants, art galleries and quirky shops to browse.

  • Hout Bay Overview

Often fondly referred to as the 'Republic of Hout Bay' by locals, the suburb often seems like an entirely different entity. Here, the pace of life is laid-back and peaceful. Scenery ranges from lush forests that surround Hout Bay, through to picturesque harbour scenes dotting with boats and fishermen bringing in their catch, along with towering mountain ranges that lie along the peninsula.

During the day, Hout Bay’s Main Road can be explored, with craft markets held most Sundays. At night, the lit-up sidewalk cafes and restaurants beckon visitors to stop by for a delicious meal.

Chapman’s Peak can be explored during most months, offering a chance to drive along the coast to take in spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean below.

Highlights & Places in Hout Bay

Hout Bay’s long Main Road takes you from the lush greenbelt of forests lying just outside the suburb to the beach, passing a range of restaurants, shops, galleries and facilities along the way.

The main township within Hout Bay is situated towards the greenbelt side of the suburb. Township tours offer a chance to visit a traditional shabeen (tavern), but visitors should not attempt to enter the township alone.

The beachfront of Hout Bay is where you can sample freshly caught seafood, have a drink at the popular restaurant/pub Dunes, take a stroll with your feet in the water or even try a boat cruise to nearby Seal Island or to the Waterfront.
