Surrounded by the Chobe, Kwando, Linyanti and Zambezi Rivers, the area is a magnet for wildlife and birdlife.   • Caprivi Strip Overview

    The Caprivi Strip used to be used solely as a gateway to Victoria Falls, however nowadays it is appreciated for its natural beauty and abundant wildlife.

    With four national parks in the Caprivi Strip, the area sports a diverse range of wildlife and birdlife. Lion, elephant, buffalo, crocodile, hippopotamus, elephant, buffalo, hippo crocs, roan antelope and kudu are to name but a few of the wildlife in the game reserves. With fenceless boundaries, wildlife are free to wander between reserves.

    The birds in Mudumu Naitonal Park are something to see. Resident species include the Coppery-tailed Coucal, Slaty Egret, Greater Swamp Warbler, Swamp Boubou and Brown Firefinch. In the summer time, huge numbers of migratory birds flock to the area, with Southern Carmine Bee-eater, Copper Sunbird, Pennant-winged Nightjar and Broad-tailed Paradise-Whydah appearing on the strip.

    Explore the strip on a 4x4 game drive safari or spend the day on a houseboat on the Zambezi or Okavango River. While on the Zambezi, tiger fishing can be enjoyed, with over 90 different species in the river’s waters.

    Flanked by four rivers (Chobe, Kwando, Linyanti and Zambezi), the Caprivi strip is a run of riverine forests and wetlands.

    There are four national parks in the Caprivi Strip: Mamili National Park, Mudumu National Park, Mahangu Game Reserve and Bwabwata, providing a variety of protected wildlife and birdlife.

    With nearly 400 different types of flora and 600 bird species, the banks of the waterways are truly picturesque.

    When to Go

    Depending on what you are going there for, will determine which months are best for you to travel in.

    If you’re going for game viewing the best time to go is between May and September; in the cooler months.

    The heat in the summer is unbearable, but if you are going to see birdlife, this would be the time to go: October to March.

    Getting There & Getting Around

    Getting To Caprivi Strip

    The best way to get to the Caprivi Strip is to take a flight to Victoria falls in Zimbabwe or Livingstone in Zambia and then either drive to your next location or take a light aircraft transfer.

    If you are in the mood for a more romantic way to travel, take a houseboat on the Zambezi river to arrive at your destination.

    Getting Around Caprivi Strip

    When in Caprivi Strip you can get around either by 4x4 safari vehicle or by boat.

    There are ATMs available in the Caprivi Strip’s capital: Katima Mulilo.

    Katima Mulilo has a number of banks where you can exchange foreign currency.

    Internet availability: 
    There are internet cafés available in Katima Mulilo and a few lodges in the Caprivi Strip offer internet connection.

    Drinking water: 
    Bottled water is recommended for drinking in this area.

    Hospitals & Medical: 
    There is a public hospital in Katima Mulilo that provides a high quality healthcare service.

    Visa Requirements: 
    You don’t need a visa to enter Namibia, but you will need a valid passport.
