There are a few essential things to pack when going on a safari in Africa that will make the whole experience so much more comfortable and enjoyable. At this point you are probably thinking, I’ve got my khaki shirt and camera, what else do I need? Well, here are a few must-haves that should be in your bag no matter what:

Clothing

Wearing shorts and T-shirts during the day, and long sleeved shirts and long pants in the evening, for warmth as well as protection from mosquitoes, is the norm and the clever thing to do. “What colour should these clothes be?”, I hear you ask. If you didn’t ask - this is more important than you think.

Since you can attract the attention of many a wild animal and even aggravate them unnecessarily, wearing a bright orange T-shirt isn’t the brightest of ideas. Khaki, brown, olive and beige colours are best for safaris and game walks as they will help you blend in with nature. White is also not a suitable colour for these activities. Firstly, it increases your visibility quotient to the animals you want to get a closer look at, and secondly, it will get dirty very quickly. You're going to Africa, remember!

As it is very possible that you may go out on a hot day, but be faced with an unpleasant chill on your return, it is always a good idea to keep a fleece or a sweater and a windbreaker with you when going on game drives.

Clothing to pack for your safari in Africa

  • 2 pairs of khaki cotton pants (jeans are rather hot)
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 2 long sleeved shirts (for sun protection as well as warmth)
  • 1 light sweater or sweatshirt
  • 1 lightweight, waterproof windbreaker
  • 1 or 2 pairs sturdy walking or hiking boots or running shoes
  • 3-5 short-sleeved shirts or T-shirts
  • 5 changes underwear and socks
  • 1 hat with a brim (baseball caps might cover your nose but not your ears and neck)

Remember that layering your clothing will keep you warmer than relying on one thick item.

Personal first aid kit

As sunburn, itchy skin and headaches on a safari in Africa are not fun, you should pack these even before you pack your toothbrush:

  • Sunscreen is essential. If you are pale a SPF of at least 30 is required for the first few days; after that SPF 15 may be adequate. The African sun is harsh most of the year.
  • Aspirin or Tylenol for mild pain or headache.
  • Moisturiser and lip balm is very important as the air tends to be dry.
  • Medication for diarrhea, cuts, bites, blisters and sores.
  • Insect repellent. Liquid drops are best for skin application unless your skin is sensitive, sprays may be taken for clothes.

Please note that you may be very far from any medical facility. For detailed and/or definitive medical advice, please consult your physician. Your medical requirements are your responsibility.

Travel Documents

A valid passport is required for your trip; be sure to check the expiry date. It is a good idea to carry a photocopy of the photo page and the entry stamp page of your passport as an additional piece of identification.

Travel Insurance

It is your responsibility to provide your own travel insurance. It is imperative that you accomplish this prior to your arrival in Africa, since you will be unable to participate in any travelling activities without it.

Photography

Africa is rich in photo opportunities and you can’t afford to miss a chance to capture the beauty of this magical country. Always carry enough film, memory sticks, batteries etc, as it is difficult to get in some remote places. Keep your cameras in a dust resistant, padded case and out of the midday sun.

Other things that are just as important are a valid passport (international arrival), a valid visa (if required), one other picture ID (e.g. driver's license), photocopy of passport page to carry in wallet , air tickets and spending money.

If you have all these essentials packed, you can sit back, relax and enjoy your safari in Africa!
