I wouldn’t recommend hitch hiking in Africa. In fact, I wouldn’t recommend hitch hiking on any continent. Travelling in Africa is safe when done through a reputable booking agent. However, when relying on passing vehicles along your path to transport you to your next point, you can never be sure who is going to pick you up, which definitely introduces an element of danger.
The excitement of the unknown is extremely appealing to many travellers, however if you’re looking for a ‘roughing it’, budget trip through Africa, I’d recommend travelling on an overland trip, which is bookable with an agent.
Hope this helps!
