The Bazaruto consists of 5 whale-shaped islands immersed in the Indian ocean. There are endless activities in the Bazaruto Archipelago. Spend your holiday having seafood picnics on the beach, bobbing in the warm Indian Ocean, deep-sea fishing and diving.  

  • Bazaruto Archipelago Overview

    The Bazaruto Archipelago is one of the most magical destinations in Africa.

    Miles after miles of deserted sandy beach and calm turquoise water characterise the Bazaruto. The islands are partly linked to the coast by sand bars, coral reefs and thick mangroves. There are handfuls of tropical activities on offer. Fish in some of the world’s most exciting waters, wander effortlessly along the shores, cut through the waves in a wooden dhow or kayak.

    Nearby attractions are the Bazaruto National Park and incredible diving reefs. The park was declared in 1971.Tidal flats and inland saline lakes support a wide variety of seabird species. Over 150 bird species inhabit the islands.

    Diving the Bazaruto goes beyond world class. The ocean environment is incredible and has an abundance of marine life. Experience dramatic drop-offs and some of the healthiest reef-systems in the world.

    The Bazaruto Archipelago comprises of five tropical islands off the coast of Mozambique, near the mainland city of Vilanculos. The islands are characterised by miles of deserted coastline, sandbars and warm tropical ocean.

    All resorts in the archipelago are sheer luxury. Most villas have private plunge pools, private outdoor dining areas, outdoor showers and spas.

    If you can drag yourself away from your room, there are endless activities on offer. Delight in dhow cruises; fishing, horse riding on the beach, snorkelling, water sports and island drives.

    It must be said, lazing under a palm, on one of the sundrenched beaches, and drifting away on a massage bed, are the most popular activities.

    When to Go

    The best time to visit the Bazaruto Archipelago is during the dry season. These are the cool months and last from May to November.

    The islands are quite hot during December and January, which can make travelling unpleasant.

    The hurricane season is from February to March. We don't suggest you travel to the Bazaruto at this time. 

    Getting There & Getting Around

    Getting To Bazaruto Archipelago

    Vilanculos and Inhassoro are the gateways to the islands. If staying at one of the island resort, they will arrange transfers from the mainland to the island. Often it is a direct seaplane flight from Maputo.

    If you are visiting the island to scuba dive or snorkel then you'll come on day trip using the fast dive boats.

    Getting Around Bazaruto Archipelago

    From the mainland there are dhows, dive boats and sea planes that access and go between the islands.

    Once you are on the islands you can get around on foot. 

    Bazaruto Archipelago Tips : Know Before You Go

    ATMs:
    There are no banks or ATM machines on the islands. Vilanculos is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. There are 2 reliable banks in Vilanculos; Barclays & BCI. They are near the town’s entrance. They are open between 8h00 – 15h00 on weekdays. Barclays Bank is also open Saturdays 9h00 – 12h00. All banks have ATM machines.

    Forex/Money:
    Exchange your currency in Vilanculos. There are 2 reliable banks in Vilanculos; Barclays & BCI. Exchange your currency for Mozambique Metical, Dollars, Euros, Pounds or South African Rands. The more remote regions in Mozambique do not have much in the way of financial facilities.

    Credit/Debit cards:
    Credit cards aren't always accepted. The upmarket lodges in the Bazaruto Archipelago have credit and debit card facilities.

    Internet availability:
    Internet access is available in Mozambique, but is limited to the major cities. However, there is internet access at the Bazaruto Archipelago resorts.

    Drinking water:
    Travellers are advised to boil the tap water before drinking it, or to buy mineral water. Tap water can safely be used for showering and brushing your teeth. All resorts provide guests with bottled water.

    Hospitals & Medical:
    There are private clinics, hospitals and pharmacies in Vilanculos. Advance payment is required either in meticais, rands, dollars or Visa card. Prior to arrival, you are required to have had the yellow fever vaccine. You are required to take malaria preventions.
